Plot of Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo (2016)
Kim Bok-Joo (played by Lee Sung-Kyung) is a talented collegiate weightlifter with a bright personality and a strong sense of justice. Her father runs a small chicken restaurant, and her uncle, who dreams of becoming an actor, also lives with them. Despite her strength and determination, Bok-Joo and her friends on the female weightlifting team aren’t very popular with the guys and haven’t had much luck in the romance department. Adding to their challenges, the weightlifting team has an ongoing rivalry with the rhythmic gymnastics team, leading to frequent clashes.
Jung Joon-Hyung (played by Nam Joo-Hyuk) is a 21-year-old collegiate swimmer who struggles with recurring false start disqualifications. Despite his carefree and free-spirited nature, these setbacks weigh heavily on him. He was raised by his loving uncle and aunt, along with his cousin, Jung Jae-Yi (played by Lee Jae-Yoon).
One day, while on campus, Kim Bok-Joo accidentally bumps into Jung Joon-Hyung as he rides his bicycle. Although he finds her face familiar, he can’t immediately place where he’s seen her before. After their encounter, Bok-Joo finds a handkerchief that Joon-Hyung left behind, not knowing how important it is to him.
Later, Bok-Joo thoughtfully cleans and irons the handkerchief before returning it to Joon-Hyung at the swimming pool. However, instead of being grateful, Joon-Hyung reacts with anger upon seeing that she cleaned it, as the handkerchief holds special significance for him. During their argument, Bok-Joo accidentally falls into the pool, and Joon-Hyung instinctively jumps in to save her.
At that moment, the two of them realize why they seem so familiar to each other. When they were children, Bok-Joo had saved Joon-Hyung’s life by catching him before he fell to the ground, creating a bond between them that neither had forgotten.
From this point on, their relationship begins to develop, starting with a mix of awkwardness and fond memories. As they spend more time together, they start to support and inspire each other, both in their athletic careers and personal lives. Their growing friendship gradually blossoms into something deeper, filled with humor, warmth, and the challenges of young love.
Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-Joo is a heartwarming and lighthearted story that explores themes of friendship, love, and self-discovery, set against the backdrop of collegiate sports.
