Plot of Signal (2016)
In Signal, Hae-Young (played by Lee Je-Hoon) is a criminal profiler and police lieutenant with a deep mistrust of the police, rooted in a traumatic experience from his childhood. In 2000, when Hae-Young was just an elementary school student, his classmate Yoon-Jung was kidnapped and later found dead. Hae-Young witnessed a woman taking Yoon-Jung from school, but when he reported this to the police, they dismissed his testimony, insisting that the suspect was a man. The killer was never caught, and the case remains unsolved, leaving a lasting impact on Hae-Young.
Years later, Hae-Young becomes involved in a different kind of investigation when he meets a reporter at a cafe to reveal information about a celebrity scandal. Unbeknownst to him, veteran detective Soo-Hyun (played by Kim Hye-Soo) is at the same cafe, staking out the meeting. Mistaking Hae-Young for a stalker, she arrests him, unaware that he is also a cop. This incident leads Hae-Young back to the same police station where he reported Yoon-Jung’s kidnapping years ago.
As Hae-Young prepares to leave the station, he hears a voice coming from a walkie-talkie. To his astonishment, the voice belongs to Detective Jae-Han (played by Cho Jin-Woong), who has been speaking to him from the year 2000. Jae-Han is investigating the disappearance of Hae-Young’s childhood classmate, Yoon-Jung, and through the mysterious connection provided by the walkie-talkie, the two detectives begin to communicate across time.
Together, Hae-Young and Jae-Han work to solve cold cases, including the unresolved case of Yoon-Jung’s kidnapping, as well as other crimes that have haunted the past and present. Their collaboration reveals the truth behind these cases, but it also uncovers corruption within the police force and the complexities of altering events across time.
Signal is a thrilling and suspenseful drama that combines elements of crime, mystery, and science fiction. It explores themes of justice, fate, and the impact of the past on the present, creating a gripping narrative that keeps viewers on the edge of their seats.
