Plot of Itaewon Class (2020)
In Itaewon Class, Park Sae-Ro-Yi (played by Park Seo-Jun) is a principled and determined young man who transfers to a new high school. On his first day, he witnesses his classmate Jang Geun-Won bullying another student. Unable to stand by, Sae-Ro-Yi punches Geun-Won, not knowing that Geun-Won is the son of Jang Dae-Hee (played by Yoo Jae-Myung), the powerful CEO of the Jagga Group, a prominent restaurant business where Sae-Ro-Yi’s father works.
CEO Jang Dae-Hee demands that Sae-Ro-Yi apologize to his son, but Sae-Ro-Yi refuses to compromise his morals. As a result, he is expelled from school, and his father is fired from his job at Jagga. Soon after, tragedy strikes when Sae-Ro-Yi’s father dies in a motorcycle accident caused by Jang Geun-Won. Consumed by grief and rage, Sae-Ro-Yi violently attacks Geun-Won, leading to his arrest and imprisonment.
While in prison, Sae-Ro-Yi vows to take down CEO Jang Dae-Hee and the Jagga Group to avenge his father’s death. Upon his release, he sets out to fulfill his promise by opening a restaurant in Itaewon, a vibrant neighborhood in Seoul. His restaurant, named DanBam, is the first step in his long and arduous journey to bring down Jagga.
Jo Yi-Seo (played by Kim Da-Mi), a social media influencer known for her sharp intelligence and rebellious spirit, becomes interested in Sae-Ro-Yi’s mission and joins DanBam as the manager. Despite her cold and calculating demeanor, Yi-Seo gradually develops feelings for Sae-Ro-Yi and becomes a crucial ally in his quest for revenge.
Together, they face numerous challenges as they work to build DanBam into a successful business and bring down the powerful Jang family. Along the way, Sae-Ro-Yi’s unwavering determination, sense of justice, and the support of his loyal friends drive him toward his ultimate goal.
Itaewon Class is a compelling story of resilience, revenge, and the pursuit of justice, set against the backdrop of Itaewon’s diverse and dynamic community. It explores themes of loyalty, ambition, and the power of standing up for what is right, even in the face of overwhelming odds.
