Plot of Marriage Contract (2016)
Ji-Hoon (played by Lee Seo-Jin) has grown up with a cynical outlook on life, largely shaped by his complicated family background Marriage Contract. Despite being born into wealth, his life has been marred by the circumstances of his birth—his mother had an affair with a married man, leading to Ji-Hoon’s birth. Separated from his mother at a young age, Ji-Hoon was raised by his father’s family, which only deepened his sense of detachment and bitterness.
His life takes a sharp turn when he learns that his estranged mother is gravely ill with a liver disease and has little time left. Desperate to save her, Ji-Hoon becomes frantic in his search for a liver donor. During this tumultuous time, he crosses paths with Hye-Soo (played by Uee) and her young daughter Eun-Sung (Shin Rin-Ah).
Hye-Soo is a widowed single mother, struggling under the weight of her late husband’s debts and the constant harassment from loan sharks. Despite her challenges, she tries to provide a stable life for her daughter. Hye-Soo finds work at the restaurant owned by Ji-Hoon, where her life takes another unexpected turn. She discovers she has a brain tumor and realizes that she doesn’t have much time left. With her daughter’s future in mind, Hye-Soo becomes desperate for a solution.
Upon overhearing Ji-Hoon’s search for a liver donor, Hye-Soo approaches him with a proposition. She offers to be the donor in exchange for financial security for her daughter. However, to make the arrangement legally possible, Ji-Hoon proposes marriage to Hye-Soo. Unaware of her terminal illness, Ji-Hoon agrees, and the two enter a marriage contract that will change both of their lives in ways they never expected.
