Plot of Pinocchio (2014)

As a child, Ha-Myeong (played by Lee Jong-Suk) grew up in a loving family with his firefighter father, mother, and older brother Pinocchio. Both Ha-Myeong and his older brother (played by Yun Kyun-Sang) possess above-average intellect and take great pride in their father. However, a devastating fire at a waste facility destroys their family. Ha-Myeong’s mother dies shortly afterward, and he is left adrift, eventually being rescued from the ocean by an unknown man (played by Byun Hee-Bong).

The man who pulls Ha-Myeong from the ocean is the grandfather of In-Ha (played by Park Shin-Hye). Believing Ha-Myeong to be his eldest son Dal-Po, who died 30 years ago, the grandfather adopts him and changes his name to Dal-Po. Ha-Myeong, now Dal-Po, lives with In-Ha as her uncle, despite being the same age. In-Ha has Pinocchio Syndrome, which causes her to hiccup whenever she lies. Dal-Po and In-Ha get along well until Dal-Po discovers that In-Ha’s mother (played by Jin Kyung) is the reporter who covered the waste facility fire that destroyed his family. This revelation leads Dal-Po to distance himself from In-Ha, though he begins to develop feelings for her.

Years later, Dal-Po and In-Ha’s family move to Seoul. In-Ha aspires to become a reporter like her mother and meets her for the first time in years during a job interview at MSC Broadcasting Station. Unfortunately, In-Ha’s mother rejects her because of her Pinocchio Syndrome.

To support the family, Dal-Po works as a taxi driver. One day, he encounters In-Ha’s mother and decides to become a reporter himself, driven by the desire to uncover the truth and seek justice for his family’s tragedy.
