Plot of Reply 1988 (2015)
In Reply 1988, the story revolves around five childhood friends—Duk-Sun (played by Hyeri), Jung-Hwan (played by Ryu Jun-Yeol), Sun-Woo (played by Ko Gyung-Pyo), Dong-Ryong (played by Lee Dong-Hwi), and Taek (played by Park Bo-Gum)—who have grown up together in the same neighborhood in Seoul. Set in 1988, the drama captures the essence of their close-knit friendship and the everyday lives of their families, who are also very close.
Duk-Sun’s family is financially struggling, living in a semi-basement house due to her father Dong-Il (played by Sung Dong-Il) losing money after guaranteeing someone else’s debt. Despite these hardships, Duk-Sun remains cheerful and lively, with a passion for singing and dancing. She often clashes with her older sister, Bo-Ra (played by Ryoo Hye-Young), leading to frequent arguments.
Jung-Hwan’s family experiences a sudden change in fortune, becoming wealthy overnight. Jung-Hwan, however, remains grounded, with a deep love for soccer, which becomes his main obsession.
Sun-Woo is the perfect student—academically successful and a devoted son and brother. He takes on a lot of responsibility at home, helping to care for his younger sister, as his mother has been raising them alone since the death of his father.
Dong-Ryong, the fun-loving member of the group, enjoys dancing and hanging out with his friends. Although he dreams of attending university, his poor academic performance forces him to give up on that goal, choosing instead to focus on the present with his friends.
Taek, the youngest and most introverted of the group, is a prodigy in the game of go, earning the nickname “God” for his exceptional skills. Having dropped out of school to focus on his go career, Taek relies on Duk-Sun, Jung-Hwan, Sun-Woo, and Dong-Ryong as his only close friends, as they bring a sense of normalcy and joy to his life.
The drama unfolds with a mix of nostalgia, humor, and heartwarming moments as these five friends navigate the ups and downs of adolescence, family relationships, and the complex feelings of first love. Reply 1988 beautifully captures the essence of friendship, community, and the simple joys of life in a bygone era, making it a beloved series that resonates with viewers across generations.
